Born free in Delaware, Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893) and her sister Amelia Shadd published an anti-slavery newspaper that fought racism and gender discrimination. After moving back to the U.S. from Canada, Cary campaigned for women’s rights and attended conventions. She also established the Colored Woman’s Franchise Association in Washington, D.C.
