This painting, done around 1616, is a reference to Rubens’s marital bliss. Here, as is so often the case with his religious paintings, we at once recognise members of Rubens’s immediate family. His first wife, Isabella Brant, was probably the model for the Virgin, and in the Child Jesus we distinguish the features of Nicolaas, his second son.
