Leopoldo Fregoli (Roma 1867 - Viareggio 1936) was an actor, scriptwriter, director, but especially the most famous transformist of the world. The neologism “fregolismo” was also applied to the political transformations.
He began to create entertainments during the military service to Massaua.
In 1891, he began in Rome to the theatre Esedra with big success, and in 1894 he made a tour of three years in Spain, he continued in South America, in the United States of America, in London and in every European capital cities and ended by Paris, where he stayed seven months in the Olympia, sold out for every shows.
Until 1925, Fregoli continued to fill theatres all around the world and gave his last show Brasil, at the top of his art. At this moment, he withdrew in Viareggio where he died in 1936.
On his grave he made engrave: “Fregoli realized here his last transformation”.
