About the craft: Chau is an acrobatic mask dance form from Purulia district of West Bengal. Colourful masks, rhythmic drum beats, powerful acrobatic movements and somersaults are characteristics of the Purulia Chau. Traditionally the artists of Charida produced Chau dance masks - a specialized craft, and constituted a sub-industry of Chau dance form. Presently, Chau mask-makers craft different types of masks, both for the dance form and for home décor. Today, they have evolved into an independent artists' hub. Chau Dance features on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity.
