According to information from the J.F.G. Umlauff company, through which the museum acquired the object in 1913, this mask originated on Nissan Island, an atoll located to the north-west of Bougainville Island. It features a sculpted hat and an applied moustache of plant fibres. The mask’s appearance suggests that it was made to represent a particular person.
