In celebration of the 80th anniversary of the birth of Brazilian cartoonist Maurício de Sousa (80), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art and Gaudiumassociates LTD., Banditrazos LatinCommunication hold special exhibition of Master of comics who is called “Walt Disney of South America”. The exhibition title is “Masterpieces with Monica: From Louvre to Metropolitan” and hold from 7th April to 23th August. This is the exhibition in Korea that introduces Maurício de Sousa’s body of artworks, whose comic books have been translated into 10 languages and sold 1 billion copies in 30 countries around the world. This special exhibition will display comic books and diverse materials that show past records and accomplishment of Monica, his cartoon character globally loved by children. Also exhibited are Maurício’s oil paintings and sculptures featuring Monica which pay tribute to world’s most famous paintings. There are about 51 artworks where Maurício regenerated famous paintings like Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, the Birth of Venus by Botticelli, and Pajuk-do by Kim Deuk-shin, a painter in Chosun Dynasty with his cartoon characters. Those artworks are a good representation of his infinite creativity and world of art full of brilliant wit. As the first exhibition in Korea to showcase fun and adorable artworks of Monica loved not only in Brazil but also across the globe, it would be a great opportunity for the Korean public to take a look at the 60-year career of Maurício de Sousa who is expanding his works toward the whole art industry, breaking from the boundary of cartoon.
