The 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup was originally to be held in China, but an outbreak of the SARS virus prompted FIFA to move the tournament at short notice to the United States, which had hosted the competition to great acclaim four years prior.

This match ticket for $175 permitted entry to the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington D.C. for the two matches held on Sunday 21 September: USA v Sweden and Brazil v South Korea.

The hosts kicked off at 12:30pm local time and defeated Sweden 3-1, courtesy of goals from Kristine Lilly, Cindy Parlow and Shannon Boxx. At 3:15pm, Brazil triumphed over South Korea, thanks to a first half penalty from the legendary Marta and two second half goals from Kátia.

The attendance for the day was a reported 34,144.
