in the history of modern decorative art in Norway. A study from the central motif, the rising sun over a coastal landscape, is exhibited here. In the same way, his canvases from these years render impres- sions from the summer and winter nature of his home land, where mighty male figures are working or standing naked on the sea shore («Bathing Man> 1918). The great, powerful style of the Aula paintings prevails here too. The years after 1920 show us Munch in a more retrospective mind, repeating and varying many of his old themes from the 90's. Sensations of dream and imagination awake again in his deep-toned nightly visions from Ekely with their rich, sonorous blue («Landscape with a Starry Sky» 1923–24). Some vigorously painted female nudes, four of them connected in the cycle «Morning, Day, Evening, Night» (1925), prove how masterfully he still is able to treat such themes. With increasing years his production becomes more scarce, but even from his latest years remarkable things may be found, not the least among them being his self- portraits. In their merciless, inquiring manner they express in a striking way his loneliness, defiance and scorn, but also noble resignation and dignity («Between the Clock and the Bed» 1940).
