The artist, a member of the Vienna Secession since 1909, approached Italian art circles in the 1920s, the years when he apparently painted this Maternity. The subject shows religious elements and seems to be in line with his production. The space in the painting looks like a flat mosaic with sections of brown and earth-like colours that stand out from the lantern placed in the bottom-right corner. This is the only source of light in the poor stable where the son of a peasant was born, with clear hints to the one where Jesus was born.
