Irun, Spain

Darío de Regoyos is considered to be Spain's leading impressionist. He embraced modernism as a result of a close association with major centres of change such as Brussels and Paris in the 1880s and 1890s, having moved to the Belgian capital in 1879 to pursue his studies in painting. This is one of the first pictures he painted on his arrival there, and depicts an intimate moment between two of the members of the household he lodged with; the mother is holding in her arms the little Emma Bogaerts, whom Regoyos painted on several occasions over the following years. The framing and the contrasting use of light already show the young Regoyos’ interest in innovation.
