Mathew Mulrooney was a sawyer at Henry Ford's northern Michigan lumber operations. In 1930, Victor Perini, manager of Ford's Iron Mountain sawmill and recently tapped to oversee Ford's rubber plantation in Brazil, encouraged Mulrooney to come with him to Fordlandia. Mulrooney agreed. Upon arrival, Mulrooney established a working sawmill to produce usable lumber from the cleared forest.
