This engraving shows a view of what is now North Parade in Matlock Bath. A fashionable couple in a curricle are driving south, whilst a larger carriage, perhaps a stagecoach or mail coach is behind them heading north.
Matlock Bath has been a popular tourist destination since the 1700s. In the 1700s and early 1800s it was visited for its dramatic scenery and mineral waters. After the coming of the railway, it became popular with day trippers from nearby cities.
