“I am originally from Nunapitchuk, the Southwestern part of Alaska. I am Yup’ik. I moved here permanently in 2000. I love being a teacher. I love to be around students. I love to see their faces bright up when they finally get the concept that I am teaching. I love that the most. I love being present with them and letting them know I care and that I am here for them. This is my ninth year of teaching.

I would like to see more students go out and further their education. I do have some students that have gone out to pursue higher education, but I would like to see more of them go out and then come back to do jobs that can contribute back to the community.” — Matthew Berlin is Yup’ik and lives in Buckland, Alaska.
