In the south-east plume, St Matthew is accompanied by St Jerome and his symbol, the cardinal’s hat: with the usual affable and laughing verve the master juxtaposes to the noble solemnity of the two saints, also in force of the vivid chromatic contrast between the red, the turquoise blue and the golden yellow that color their clothes, the uninhibited presence of some putti that appear in the most unlikely poses; one of them is revealed through the tiny leg projected out of the space of the composition. They are both absorbed, one reading and the other writing : Matthew, despite having before him his Gospel wide open, supported by the angelic creature, is interested in the writing of Jerome who stands beside him with two books.
