Mauna Kea

This landscape depicts an early view of Mauna Kea volcano on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The beach in the foreground is where Laurance Rockefeller built the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in the early 1960s. The Hawaiian artist was inspired by the "Volcano School," the art movement that arose due to the frequent eruptions of Kilauea during the 19th century, and the popularity of American landscape art.
