Marshal of France. Veteran of the Franco-German War of 1870-1871 whom he did as an artillery officer, a survivor of the battle of Champigny. He was military governor of Paris from 1912 to 1914. In August 14, appointed head of the 6th army which is north of Paris, he halted the advance of von Kluck's troops, and took part in the Ourcq at the first French victory of the Marne (September 1914). Promoted to Marshal of France posthumously
