The motif of a human soul carried in the arms or on the back of a figure out of this world appears several times in the works of Hofman, a representative of Young Poland's symbolism, who combined nature with poetry and myth.
Sometimes the human soul directly into the abyss of hell is carried on his back by the prince of darkness with black wings. In our painting, however, a good angel carries the soul to a better, brighter world.
