The McDonogh No. 35 Gazette debuted in January 1958. It aimed "to give the public a bird's-eye view of the events which are going on in our school, and, most of all, to give the student a chance to express his ideas in this time of turmoil." McDonogh No. 35. founded in 1917 to educate first through ninth graders, became a high school in 1920, as a response of the Orleans Parish School Board to the African American community who petitioned and sought a public high school for African Americans. By the late 1950s, the faculty of 30 educated nearly 600 students under the helm of long-time principal Mack Spears.
