With 'Me/mento, 4am"ne"siac', Jo Kanamori made a very personal ballet, based on a traumatic memory. When he was sixteen, Kanamori fell through a glass roof. At the last minute, he was able to grab something to hold onto but as he was hanging there, he saw his life flashing before his eyes. Most images involved his mother.
The accident has been a turning point in his life. “The first years after the accident I was overwhelmed by a feeling of running out of time. That I didn’t know how much time I had left and that there was so much I still wanted to do. So my life felt like a race against time. Only in the last few years, I have been able to let go of that feeling."
Kanamori acknowledged that working on this ballet was emotional sometimes: “Because amnesia is really me. People have the remarkable capability of forgetting. It’s the same with me: Somehow, eventually I forgot how happy I should be that I was alive.”
