Mechanical table

Through the working of intricate mechanisms, a set of covered shelves emerges from this flat-topped table. The shelves in turn contain enclosed side compartments, lined with blue silk damask. The sophistication of the mechanism, twinned with the fine marquetry, shows that Oeben was both a talented mechanic and a master craftsman. The table was given to Julius Wernher in 1874 as a gift from his mentor, Jules Porgès.
