Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

This gold medallion bears the profile of Duchess Sophie of Brandenburg (1568–1622), the wife since 1582 of Duke Christian (I) of Saxony. A jaunty little hat with a clasp, a ruff (so-called Mühlstein collar), and puffed sleeves are parts of her costume. On the obverse, an angel is holding the coat of arms of Brandenburg. The inscription is the motto of the duchess herself.
