The Treaty of El Pardo was signed by England and Spain on January 14, 1739, and established the rules governing English trade in Spanish America. The treaty was broken several times by both parties and, soon after, the 2 powers clashed in the War of Jenkins' Ear (in Spanish, the ''Guerra del Asiento'').

The public outcry in England against the Spanish was reflected in medals such as this one. On the obverse, Britannia appears wielding a sword over the sea along with the inscription ''ILL . REVENGE . MY . WRONGS .'' The back shows a Spanish soldier defeated by a Briton with the words ''BRITONS* STRIKE* HOME''—the first verse of a popular song of the British Navy.
