Medal commemorating the liberation of Barcelona by supporters of Archduke Charles of Austria on May 12, 1706, after the city was besieged by the Franco-Spanish troops led by Philip V. Struck in Germany by Philipp Heinrich Müller.
On the obverse of the medal is a bust of the Archduke, who was crowned Charles III, with the following inscription around the edge: "CAROLUS . III . DG REX HISPAN . ARCH. AUST" (Charles III, by the Grace of God, King of Spain, Archduke of Austria).
On the back, the city of Barcelona is depicted with its port and the boats that took part in the battle. The besiegers are fleeing and there is a solar eclipse in the sky (the French fled on the day of an eclipse). It reads: "UNIUS LIBERATIO ALTERIUS./OPRESSIO" (The liberation of one is the oppression of another). The word "BARCELONA" is inscribed on a bridge. On the exergue are the words: "FUGA GALL [ORUM]. ET . ECLIPS [IS]. /EOD [EM] . DIE 12 . MAI ./ 1706,"; and the following is inscribed around the edge: "O NIMIUM DILECTE DEO TIBI MILITAT AETHER" (Oh beloved prince of God, the heavens are fighting with you).
