Medal of the prince-bishop Cristoforo Madruzzo

Lorenzo Fragni called Lorenzo Parmense

Museo Diocesano Tridentino

Museo Diocesano Tridentino
Trento, Italy

On the observe of the medal is depicted the cardinal and prince-bishop of Trento Cristoforo Madruzzo, the Council’s munificent host. On the reverse an allegory stands out, extolling the revival: a phoenix with spread wings rises up out of half-extinguished flames accompanied by the text “REVIXIT” (“He lives again”). In the upper section, two crowns, one of laurel and the other of palm leaves, enclose the letters “PL”, the initials of the medal’s creator (Laurentius Parmensis), united in logotype.
The medal was struck after 1568, the year in which Lorenzo Fragni aka Lorenzo Parmense was summoned to Rome by his maternal uncle Giovan Federico Bonzagni to work at the Papal mint.
