This medallion was awarded to Henry Chamberlain Russell, Government Astronomer at Sydney Observatory from 1870 to 1905. Russell was one of the most significant astronomers in the Observatory's history.

This silver medal was awarded to H. C. Russell for his meteorological instruments displayed at the 1888 Centennial International Exhibition in Melbourne in the mathematical and philosophical instruments category. Russell's meteorological work was an important part of his achievements at Sydney Observatory and the medal documents this activity.

Russel was awarded numerous medals for scientific advancements he made during his career. The Powerhouse Museum has two other medallions awarded to H. C. Russell from the Agricultural Society of NSW, in 1872 for his self registering barometer and tide gauge (90/318), and in 1873 for his reflecting telescope (2004/126/21).

This medallion is of national significance for its association with one of Australia's earliest astronomers. It is also significant for its association with the 1888 Centennial International Exhibition, and the Stokes & Sons company.
