Medal with Michelangelo (recto)

The medal preserved in Casa Buonarroti is in lead and so it is different by the four medals, in silver and bronze, that Leone Leoni send to Michelangelo with the letter of 14th March 1561. The example shows, on the observe, Michelangelo portrayed in profile, looking to the right and on the margin there’s the inscription “MICHAELANGELUS BONARROTUS FLOR[entinus] AET[atis] S[uae] ANN[orum] 88”. The stated age is wrong, for we know that Michelangelo was born in 1475. Under the bust is set out the artist’s signature “LEO”. It is not known how the medal it became part of the Buonarroti’s collection.
