Amsterdam, Netherlands

Written by Jan Six, the tragedy Medea premiered in 1647. Rembrandt designed the title page for the printed play. The scene he depicted, incidentally, does not appear in it: he only summarized the plot. In the right foreground is Medea, abandoned by her husband, Jason, who marries Princess Creusa on the dais above. Medea wrought gruesome vengeance on them.
