The more we use antibiotics, the faster bacteria develop resistance. This means that reducing the amount of antibiotics used in hospitals is critical in combating the emergence of superbugs around the world.

Powerful UV lights are being used to disinfect hospital rooms, killing bacteria in hard-to-reach areas such as ceilings. Doctors are also working to reduce the amounts of antibiotics being given out. About 10% of antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary, and about 90% of doctors in England have felt pressured by their patients to prescribe antibiotics when they are not needed. At the same time, about 29% of people do not take their prescriptions of antibiotics as intended.
