The dust, poor food, and crowded conditions of the first months heightened fears of serious illness or epidemic. All arriving internees were vaccinated against typhoid and smallpox by a volunteer medical staff made up of internees. In July 1942, patients, equipment, and supplies were moved into a new 250-bed hospital complex for comprehensive medical care.
