This medicine gourd prepared by grandfathers had 169 seeds. It was used by medicinemen to diagnose illness. The medicine man would shake the seeds in the gourd and pour out some. If an odd number fell out of the gourd, the medicine man would question the patient but not diagnose the illness. He therefore shakes several times asking the patient questions until an even number falls out and diagnoses the cause of illness.
