On the North wall of St Lawrence, Broughton is a depiction of Christ in the arms of his mother, known as the Pieta, that dates from around 1470. The subject was popular in 14th century Italy and reached England in the 15th Century. Nine men surround Christ and Mary, holding parts of Christ's body. This image has a surprising secondary meaning, as a warning against blasphemy. This painting is likely connected to a medieval story that features the Virgin Mary confronting those
that swore on parts of Christ's body in anger with the body of her son, wounded by their sinful words. Two men are arguing over a game and another man is holding the heart of Christ.
