After spending a summer selling ads for a student magazine, Meg Whitman (born 1956) decided to major in economics. She became one of the most prominent women in business.
Whitman held leadership positions at Proctor & Gamble and the Walt Disney Company before becoming president of the online auction site eBay in 1998. Its website was a plain black and white page that crashed for eight hours on Whitman’s first day. She helped turn eBay into a multinational e-commerce giant. Whitman also led a turnaround effort at legendary Hewlett-Packard.
She ran for governor of California in 2010, winning the Republican primary but losing the election.
