Scroll or megillah with the Book of Esther, which is read during the celebration of the Feast of the Casting of the Lots or Purim.
The scroll has two parts: the manuscript and a cylindrical case of embossed silver, decorated with a crown. Curtains tied with cords hang over the opening where the manuscript is placed. The case has a handle to remove the scroll and facilitate its reading.
The Feast of Purim is the most festive of the Jewish calendar. It commemorates the salvation of the Jews of Persia thanks to the intervention of Queen Esther. She defended them from Haman, who had accused them of not complying with the laws of the kingdom. During the reading of the manuscript, when the name of this character is pronounced, the children rattle the rattles.
