Starting his career as an extra, Mehboob turned to direction making key films during the 1940s studio era. By 1943, he started his own banner. Between 1935-1964, he had directed twenty-two films. Few directors have left such an indelible impact on Indian cinema as Mehboob Khan. His most internationally well-known film is the Oscar-nominated Mother India.
