Originally the 1959 Penguin coffee shop, this eye-catching building and sign (designed by Googie architecture pioneers Armet and Davis) are located at the western terminus of Route 66. After the Penguin closed, it served for years as a dentist’s office. However, the Weiss family then leased the property, restored its gorgeous Googie-ness inside and out, and opened another Mel’s Drive-in here in 2018!
