Shows the small settlement of Melbourne from the southern side of the Yarra River; includes the rocky bar that formed the falls near Queen Street.
Robert Russell, surveyor, architect and artist was appointed surveyor to the infant settlement at Port Phillip on 10th September 1836 and arrived in the area on 5th October 1836. Robert Hoddle superseded him in 1837.
This watercolour was created in 1882 from an original sketch of Melbourne drawn in 1838.
