This print depicts Melrose Abbey, Scottish Borders, which features in many of Scott's works, most famously The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805). The religious house of Kennaquhair in Scott's novels The Monastery and The Abbot (both 1820) is also based on the Abbey. Scott oversaw the restoration of the Abbey in 1822 and described it in detail in his 'Essay on Border Antiquities' (1814). The print was engraved by Joseph Clayton Bentley after a drawing by David Roberts.
