Boys Playing

Projeto Portinari

Projeto Portinari
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Composition in blue, earthy, white, gray, green, ochre, rose and black tones. Smooth texture with marked brushstrokes. Composition representing group of boys on a road, building on the background among trees; blue sky with white and gray plump clouds. The group consists of about eleven boys on a dirt road that cuts through the composition in light diagonal from the left to the right and front to back. The boys are in various positions, all facing to the right, looking toward the area in green tones, which suggests a plantation. Many of them have raised arms; the one at the center has the left hand holding his chin and seems to point to something with his right hand, which is stretched and down. Some have suggested facial features, all wear light-colored clothes with pants at the knees. In the background, on the left of center, close to the horizon, suggested construction of a church flanked by what appears to be two bamboo groves. Blue sky with clouds that grow plumper, larger and grayer the higher they go.
