As early golf clubs evolved, they started to take on a form more closely related to the club that is used today.
Probably the ultimate in hickory shafted iron was the stainless steel, flanged Gibson clubs of the 1920s. Paired with the 'Maxwell hosel', these clubs are today the preferred irons for serious hickory players.
