Xu Xingzhi, born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province. 1919 went to study in Shanghai Fine Art School. In 1923 he entered Shanghai Oriental Art Research Institute. In late 1920s he went to study painting in Japan Tokyo School of Fine Arts, under the instruction of Fujishima Takeji. In 1927 he went back to China and took the position of the first president of China Left-wing Artists Alliance.In 1929 he served as the president of Western Painting Office of Shanghai Chinese Arts University. In 1930 he founded Time Art Society with others like Wang Yiliu. He taught in Normal College of Sun Yat-Sen University and Social Education Institute. In 1954 he taught in China Central Academy of Fine Arts.
