Women's Suffrage Memorabilia
United States

This satirical metamorphic card depicts Belva Lockwood, whose name is misspelled, with a moveable paper skirt. When the skirt is lifted as seen in the next panel, the card reveals the image of former Civil War general, Benjamin Butler. Butler, who was sympathetic to the suffrage cause, was not known to be Lockwood's lover, although it was rumored that he had engaged in numerous other affairs. It is unclear as to why he should be satirized here other than for his general association with women's rights.
