White Ripple

Hoss Haley

The Mint Museum

The Mint Museum
Charlotte, United States

Evoking gentle ripples in water with its embossed circular patterns, "White Ripple" is constructed using panels cut from washing machines from Hoss Haley's local scrap yard in Asheville, North Carolina. He created the sine wave pattern in the individual plates using a press die that he custom-designed.

Haley is a self-taught artist who grew up on a farm in Kansas, where he learned machining and steel fabrication at an early age. He later studied blacksmithing in Texas and New Mexico, including an apprenticeship under Tom Joyce.

Today, he is a highly respected teacher of his craft, having taught at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School of Craft, and elsewhere.

Haley is a rare combination of conceptual artist and inventory, whose ideas and materials drive his relentless pursuit of the right tools and machines to achieve his desired outcome. The quiet beauty of his large-scale organic forms belies the tremendous amount of sourcing, planning, and labor that goes into each piece.
