Mi'kmaq prayerbook in hieroglyphics

It is a little-known fact that hieroglyphics were used in Canada! This rare religious text in the Mi'kmaq language contains part of a matrimonial prayer. Its author, Récollet missionary Chrestien Le Clercq (1641- ?), adapted an existing system of figurative characters for his religious instruction. These characters form a functional alphabet - in fact, it is the oldest Aboriginal script north of Mexico City!

- Description: Peu de gens le savent, mais des hiéroglyphes ont aussi été utilisés au Canada! D'origine mi'kmaq, ce manuscrit, qui contient une partie d'une prière de mariage, constitue un rare spécimen de littérature religieuse écrit en symboles hiéroglyphiques. On en attribue la paternité au missionnaire récollet Chrestien Le Clercq (1641- ?) qui adapte à des fins d'évangélisation un système de caractères figuratifs déjà utilisé par les Mi'kmaq. Ces caractères forment un alphabet fonctionnel, si bien qu'on considère l'alphabet mi'kmaq comme le plus ancien système d'écriture autochtone au nord de la ville de Mexico!
