It is a little-known fact that hieroglyphics were used in Canada! This rare religious text in the Mi'kmaq language contains part of a matrimonial prayer. Its author, Récollet missionary Chrestien Le Clercq (1641- ?), adapted an existing system of figurative characters for his religious instruction. These characters form a functional alphabet - in fact, it is the oldest Aboriginal script north of Mexico City!
