Michael Ancher was an avid hunter, who enjoyed hunting with his dogs. Ancher has described in his memoirs how the artists in the Skagen artists' colony often went hunting and how these shoots were followed by luncheons and festivities.
On the painting, the sun is setting. It is the village of Højen you can see in the background. According to Michael Ancher, Krøyer was not a particularly good hunter. In his autobiographical notes, Ancher writes about Krøyer that "He was never a great hunter but the most enjoyable hunting buddy."
