This model reproduces the functional components of the ear: a small, bent lever made from platinum wire works as the "hammer." This lever is in loose contact with a spring made of tinplate. A set screw is used to control the contact between the lever and spring. If sound waves hit the membrane, it starts to vibrate and as it does so, the small lever also starts to vibrate, exerting varying levels of pressure on the spring.
