Token, copper, 28mm diameter. Middlesex token, 1796. (DH Mddx 521b). Issuer Peter Skidmore, 1796. Obverse A man handcuffed and in irons with a padlock on his mouth: ‘A Free born Briton of 1796’. Reverse Man holding a cutlass and broken fetters: ‘A French Republican’. Notes The ‘Briton’ is a reference to the Gagging Act against sedition passed in 1795.
