Skagen, Denmark

Krøyer's last large figure painting: Here, he has gathered artists, people from the middle class and local women and children in a large circle around a Midsummer's Eve's bonfire on the beach in Skagen. The painting is a tribute to the artists' colony, but Krøyer himself is not in the picture. This is the first time he depicts the locals together with the artists, but there is a great difference between the two groups, as the artists and the people from the middle classes are positioned on the bright, left side of the painting, whilst the majority of the Skagen people are placed on the darker right side. Krøyer started on the first sketch for this painting back in 1892, but due to other assignments and illness, the painting was not finished until 14 years later.
