Portrait of Miguel Ângelo Pereira (1843-1901), composer, pianist, maestro and educator born in Barcelinhos, Barcelos, Portugal.

Pereira went to Brazil when he was still a child and lived there for several years. During this period he became organist at the Capela Real do Rio de Janeiro.

He returned to Porto when he was 20 years old, starting a career as teacher and composer.

He composed orchestral music and several operas, namely "Eurico". This opera is probably his best composition and was presented in 1870, at Teatro S. Carlos, and, in 1874, at Teatro S. João, in Porto.

Miguel Ângelo Pereira was also a talented pianist, easily playing several musical genres. He was part of the Sociedade de Quartetos do Porto, an organization founded with the objective of spreading the taste for classical music in Porto.

The engraving portraying Miguel Ângelo Pereira is the work of Alfredo Nunes dos Santos, based upon a photograph from Karl Emilio Biel.
