Considered by the critic Clive Barnes as the "most perfect ballet dancer that [he] saw," Baryshnikov asked political asylum during his tour with Ballet Kirov in Toronto, in Canada, in 1974. Since then and until 1979, he was the main ballet dancer of the American Ballet Theatre (ABT).
