Miko (children of Gods) Shugyō, Yamabushi training for woman

Miko Shugyo (Training for Child of God) is Yamabushi training for women, held at the beginning of September at Dewa Sanzan. Over 70 women from around the world attempt the training every year. This photo is the first day of training. The climbing of 2446 stone steps in the cedar forest of Mt. Haguro signifies the funeral of the pilgrims as they start their Journey to Rebirth.
